Soundproof Bedroom Door in Singapore: Does a Solid Core Door Help?

by admin | Nov 5, 2026 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Short answer: no bedroom door sold for homes is truly soundproof, but you can make a bedroom in an HDB flat or condo much quieter. The two things that matter most are a solid core door instead of a hollow one, and closing the gaps around the door, especially the gap at the bottom. A thicker door on its own makes little difference.

Customers ask us this often, usually because of a light sleeper, a baby, someone working from home or a TV in the next room. This guide explains what actually reduces noise, what each option costs with Renovaid Team, and when you need a specialist instead. For all designs and prices, see our bedroom doors page.

Why Bedroom Doors Let Noise Through

Sound reaches a bedroom in two ways: through the door leaf and around it.

  • Through the door. A hollow core door has thin skins with mostly air inside, so it passes sound easily. Home & Decor notes that standard HDB doors are often hollow and that solid-core doors can reduce noise a lot. A solid core door is heavier and denser, so it blocks more sound.
  • Around the door. Every door needs small clearances to open and close, and the gap under the door is usually the biggest. Sound leaks through any gap, so even a good solid door sounds disappointing if the gaps stay open.

As a rough guide, the US home site HomeTips puts a typical hollow core interior door below STC 20, and a solid core door that is properly sealed at about STC 34–36: enough to block quiet speech, but not loud talking or music (source). That is why a door alone will never turn a bedroom into a studio.

The laminate door with lever lock is $516 for 2 doors. The room door set price is for an opening up to 3ft × 7ft and is confirmed at site measurement. Classic doors go up to 33" wide, so they do not fit most BTO bedroom openings (usually 36"–38"); choose nyatoh, veneer or laminate there.

How to Make Your Bedroom Quieter, Step by Step

  1. Replace a hollow door with a solid core door. Our nyatoh, veneer and laminate doors are all solid core. The core is solid wood-jointed, not honeycomb.
  2. Close the gap under the door. An automatic drop seal sits in the bottom of the door and drops down when the door closes, so it does not drag on the floor. It is included in our room door set.
  3. Seal the sides and top. We do not supply perimeter seals around the frame, so these need to be added separately (Home & Decor lists rubber or foam strips sold by the metre). Any gap above the door frame should be closed with gypsum board by your ceiling or cornice contractor.
  4. Check the frame. A loose or damaged frame leaks sound. If you change the frame as well, it is quoted separately after site measurement (or included in the room door set).
  5. Don't pay for thickness alone. HDB bedroom doors are about 35–36 mm thick and fit a frame rebate of about 37–38 mm. A 38 mm door (+$40 per door) is for frames with a deeper rebate, usually in condos and landed homes. It does not insulate sound better than a 35 mm door.

Which Option Suits You?

  • Light sleeper, baby's room or home office: a solid core door is the biggest step up from a hollow door. Pick the finish you like; the sound difference between nyatoh, veneer and laminate is small. Our laminate vs nyatoh vs veneer guide compares looks, care and cost.
  • Room next to a living room TV or a noisy corridor: add the drop seal and seal the sides, or choose the room door set with a new laminate frame.
  • Home studio, music practice or karaoke room: you need a professional acoustic door and wall treatment. We do not carry these, and our doors are not as soundproof, so a specialist acoustic contractor is the right choice.

The same applies to a toilet next to a bedroom: an aluminium slide & swing door is not fully soundproof, and a bifold has gaps for its track. If quiet matters most there, a wooden swing door is the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fully soundproof bedroom door for HDB flats?
No. Home bedroom doors reduce noise but do not block it completely. A solid core door with sealed gaps is the practical best for a bedroom. Studio-grade acoustic doors are a specialist product that we do not supply.

Is a solid core door quieter than a hollow core door?
Yes. A solid core door is denser and blocks more sound than a hollow door. Our nyatoh, veneer and laminate doors are all solid core, from $480 nett for 2 doors.

Does a thicker 38 mm door block more noise?
Not noticeably. We add a 3 mm plywood layer to make a 38 mm door (+$40 per door) so it fits deeper frames, but its sound insulation is the same as a 35 mm door.

What is an automatic drop seal?
A seal fitted in the bottom of the door that drops down when the door closes and lifts when it opens, closing the gap under the door. It comes with our room door set; the sides and the top of the frame need to be sealed separately.

Do I need a new door frame?
Usually not. New bedroom doors are made to fit your existing frame. A new frame is only needed if the old one is damaged or you choose the room door set, and it is quoted after site measurement.

How long does it take?
About 14–21 working days from site measurement and deposit. Installing 4 bedroom doors takes around 4 to 5 hours on the day.
