The Evolution of HDB Gates in Singapore

Gate styles in Singapore have changed considerably over the decades — each shift driven by the shortcomings of what came before.

70s–80s

Metal Sliding Gates

Early HDB flats used metal sliding gates that pushed to one side. As metal corrodes over time, the sliding mechanism became harder to operate — rarely seen today.

80s

2-Panel Swing Gates

The 2-panel metal gate, using hinges that swing outward, became commonly used — proving more durable than the sliding design it replaced.

90s

Aluminium Gates

Gained popularity for corrosion resistance and low maintenance. However, while lightweight, they tended to slam shut in strong wind.

Today

Mild Steel Gates

Increasingly popular for gate replacement — a stronger, more durable alternative to aluminium without the corrosion issues of older sliding designs.

What is Mild Steel?

Mild steel is the most commonly used steel in the world — found in everyday objects from kitchen pans and spoons to industrial equipment.

Mild steel is an alloy — a product made by mixing metals and non-metals. Since a pure metal often cannot fulfil all the properties needed for manufacturing, additives are included to achieve specific characteristics. Mild steel is made by adding carbon and other elements to iron, which improves the metal's hardness, ductility and tensile strength.

The mildest grade of carbon steel — mild steel — contains a very low amount of carbon, between 0.05% and 0.26%. Because it's the cheapest form of steel, almost 90% of steel products worldwide are made from mild steel.

How to Maintain Your Mild Steel Gate

Mild steel is strong and durable, but being an iron-based alloy, it benefits from regular care to prevent corrosion in Singapore's humid climate.

1

Repaint Periodically

The protective paint coating is your gate's main defence against rust. Touch up chips and scratches promptly, and repaint fully every few years.

2

Lubricate Hinges

Apply light machine oil to hinges every 6–12 months to keep the gate swinging smoothly and prevent squeaking.

3

Watch for Rust Spots

Check regularly for small rust spots, especially near welds and joints. Treat early with a wire brush and touch-up paint before it spreads.

4

Clean Regularly

Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust and grime, which can trap moisture against the metal surface.

5

Check the Lock Mechanism

Ensure the lock and latch move freely. A stiff lock is often an early sign of rust or misalignment developing.

6

Avoid Standing Water

Ensure the base of the gate isn't sitting in standing water after rain, which accelerates corrosion at ground contact points.

Mild Steel Gate FAQs

What is mild steel, and why is it used for gates?

Mild steel is an alloy of iron with a low carbon content of 0.05% to 0.26%, which improves its hardness, ductility and tensile strength. It's the cheapest and most commonly used grade of steel — around 90% of the world's steel products are made from it — making it a durable and affordable choice for gates, railings and fencing.

How much does a Mild Steel Gate cost in Singapore?

Renovaid Team's Mild Steel Gates range from $600 to $1,180 nett depending on the design (FBG-01 to FBG-07) and width (3ft × 7ft or 4ft × 7ft). Pricing is nett — inclusive of measurement, delivery, installation and disposal of your existing gate.

What's the difference between the 3ft and 4ft gate options?

3ft × 7ft and 4ft × 7ft refer to the width and height of your gate opening. Most standard HDB flats use 3ft-wide openings, while some newer or larger flats have 4ft-wide openings. Measure your existing gate opening width to determine which size you need.

Should I choose Mild Steel or Wrought Iron?

Both offer similar strength, durability and starting price. Wrought Iron typically offers more ornamental, decorative pattern options, while Mild Steel designs tend to be simpler and more understated. The choice usually comes down to your preferred aesthetic — WhatsApp us a reference photo if you're unsure which style suits your home.

Can I see photos of all 7 gate designs before ordering?

Photos for FBG-01 through FBG-06 aren't published on our website — our Mobile Sales Team brings the full physical catalogue to your on-site measurement so you can see each design in person before confirming. FBG-07 is shown on this page as a sample of our finish quality.

How do I maintain a Mild Steel Gate to prevent rust?

Repaint periodically to maintain the protective coating, lubricate hinges every 6–12 months, watch for and treat rust spots early, clean regularly to remove trapped moisture and grime, and avoid letting the gate base sit in standing water after rain.
